Brig Windows BRIG WINDOWS

There's a lot to consider when you're buying windows. This window should help you reach your decision. Read on and think about
  • Style
  • Performance
  • Costs
  • Ordering
  • Installation, maintenance & finishing
  • Window surrounds-interior
  • Window surrounds-exterior.

It's important to choose the right style of window for your home. If you're designing and building a house from scratch, you have lots of control over the size and shape of your windows. You can have enormous windows that let in lots of light or little windows dotted here and there. If you're replacing windows, chances are you have fewer options at least as far as size and shape are concerned. But style doesn't end with size and shape. It's also about substance - what the window's made of, how it opens, its configuration, and the finishing touches, like brass handles.
  • Size and shape. Brig Windows come in standard square and rectangular sizes, but can also be made to order. The window can be curved-just like the beautifully curved window with radiating mullions on our Xylodom home page.

  • What the window's made of. The big division in the window market is between wood and white pvc-u. Whether you like one or the other is largely a personal preference - not surprisingly, here we like wood! The Brig windows that McConnel Wood Products supply are made of strong, durable hardwood. They are available in Mahogany (American), Iroko and Oak.

  • How the window opens. The whole "feel" of a window is influenced by the way it opens. Brig Windows are side or top hung. You can throw open a side hung window to let in air and light, but a top hung window may better suit the style of a particular building - home or office. It's also possible to order a fixed case window that doesn't open at all, like the window lights you see above doors.

  • Where the transomes and mullions are positioned . With a Brig Window, you choose where to put transomes and mullions if you want them. For example, a simple 1200 mm square window could be ordered with transomes and mullions in these positions. (Style sketches.) But bear in mind that the more complicated your window becomes, the longer it will take to manufacture and this might affect the price.

  • Last but not least what kind of handle you choose. All Brig opening windows are fitted with stainless-steel reflex hinges and handles, but solid brass locking handles are available to order.

PERFORMANCE

There are three things you need to be concerned about when thinking about window performance
  • Air and water penetration. Brig Windows have been independently tested to BS 6375:1, 2, and 3 for air and water penetration. Basically they're suitable for use in any part of Britain no matter how horrible the weather.

  • Heat loss and ventilation. Environmental performance matters. Brig window frames can accept either single glazing or double and even triple glazed units. They can also be made using low E (emissivity) glasses and gas-filled glazing units which may give some improvement to thermal performance. Adjustable trickle vents are available if you need permanent background ventilation.

  • Security. Security is more than just a good lock. Brig Windows are fitted with high quality locking handles with two point espagnolette bolts. Plus, they are internally glazed. This kind of detail is often overlooked, yet internal glazing and beading does make the window more difficult to break in through. Brig Windows also have extremely strong joints, making the window more secure.

ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT

As a responsible timber merchant, McConnel Wood Products is dependent on and concerned about the environmental aspects of timber usage and sustainability. We only deal with reputable companies like the manufacturer of Brig Windows, who through their association with the Timber Trade Federation actively encourage and support effective forest management programmes worldwide.

MAINTENANCE & FINISHING

Because hardwood is naturally durable, Brig Windows simply need to be coated with a protective stain from time to time. Before they leave the factory, each window is given a single coat of stain to protect the timber on-site and during handling before your own choice of finish is applied. Although it costs more, windows can also be supplied fully factory finished in either microporous clear or opaque stains in a full range of colours. For more information on finishes please e-mail us at info@mcconnel.co.uk or call us 01848 331-662.

WINDOW SURROUNDS, INTERNAL

If you've invested in beautiful oak windows you won't want to make do with a tongue & groove pine surround. Similarly if you're replacing your windows and the old surrounds and the new windows just don't look right together, you may want to replace them. This could mean putting in an oak windowsill and architraves. But, you might want to install oak paneling in the ingoings or even a full set of working shutters.

McConnel Wood Products can supply the sawn timber to create any internal window surrounds.

For ideas or information on window surrounds e-mail us at info@mcconnel.co.uk or call us 01848 331-662.

WINDOW SURROUNDS, EXTERIOR SHUTTERS

There aren't many cottages or houses with wooden shutters in this country, but when you see them it's amazing how good they look. It's much more common to see shutters in Europe, for instance, in the Alps where they have a necessary function as protection against extremes of weather - heat or cold.

Shutters are a design option you may wish to consider, either adding them to the house that you are currently living in or incorporating them into the design plan for the dream house that you are building yourself. McConnel Wood Products can supply the sawn timber to create any exterior window surrounds. If you would like ideas or information on exterior shutters e-mail us at info@mcconnel.co.uk or call us on 01848 331 662.
