WOODSCHOOL

Woodschool is based in the Scottish Borders near Jedburgh. They are a breeding ground and haven for quality contemporary design. The main ethos behind them is that of using the materials that they can glean from local woodland. This they use in their workshops to create snazzy clean modern looks in their furniture and interiors. If they keep going this company may be the focus of radical rethinks in how we design and create new pieces of furniture. These guys should be worth keeping an eye on.

They have sold across Europe and have an inventive and innovative approach to product. They have the Woodschool lines as well as have several craftsmen in residence creating their own work for private sale. The emphasis is on youth and enthusiasm. The range of work varies from bits and bobs for the garden to serious cabinet work, and from a bit of fancy fencing to an urn for your ashes! This organisation is a rare one in that it puts forward ideals through practical effort.

"We do not sit in a particular way because a carpenter has made a chair in such and such a manner. A carpenter makes a chair in a particular manner because that is how we wish to sit"
Adolf Loos Cultural Degeneracy, 1908

"How the gap, which is still wide, between what we do in our workshops and the present state of industry and handicrafts will finally be closed, that is the unknown X…. It is conceivable that work in the Bauhaus workshops might lead more and more to the creation of typical individual pieces"
Walter Gropius The Load-bearing capacity of the Bauhaus Idea. Notes for a circular to the Bauhaus masters.
